Subject: SW ICT Research Group - 2008 ICT Benchmarking initial findings


Although the final few interviews (out of 3200 SMEs) are being completed
this week and there is further data analysis to undertake, Step Ahead have
presented their initial results (attached) which include some major KPIs and
significant findings including:

*	

	Strong growth in ICT use (particularly Broadband), however only 17%
of SW SMEs are trading online.
*	

	Over 80% of SW SMEs have no ICT Strategy although majority consider
E-business essential/very important
*	

	Dorset significantly outperforms the other regions across all
indicators - Bournemouth/Poole Cluster effect ?
*	

	SW compared to other regions has three times the number of SMEs who
have computers but are only making very limited use of them - Potential for
Business Link to target support ?
*	

	ICT is key to enabling flexible working options, with the majority
of those SMEs seeing Improved Productivity/Competitiveness as the main
benefit
*	

	ICT related flexible working is a significant factor in enabling
access to work for reasons related to disability, caring responsibility or
cultural background.
*	

	ICT is seen as having a significant positive impact on environmental
issues such as reducing commuting/business travel and reducing production
resources
*	

	SMEs that were aware of Next Generation Broadband Access believed
that it would improve profitability.
*	

	29% of SMEs were having their business internet use limited by the
reliability and speed of their Broadband connection.
*	

	There is a strong correlation between those at the top end of ICT
Adoption and increases in Turnover and Profitability over the previous
twelve months.

I've also circulated the findings to other interested parties including
those who contributed to the brief and questionnaire development.
 
The final report is expected at the beginning of May, but please do get back
to me with any comments.

I have the meeting down for 24th April in Exeter (as stated in the minutes
