Bristol Wireless were billed to speak last, right after Microsoft small business solutions. http://www.connectingsw.net/event/24/41/the_future_of_ict_support_for_business.html "This event will consider recent changes and developments in the provision and delivery of ICT support in the South West of England. Fabian King, Head of Regional ICT at the South West Regional Development Agency will open the seminar with an address on the importance of ICT support to the regional economy". Our presentation focused on the what is open source, why we use Linux. we discussed the Linux Terminal Server Project [LTSP] and the power saving, security, flexibility, interoperability and the huge range of software available. We went on to talk about extending the useful life of hardware, cost saving for /seat licensing, scalability, hot desking, ease of administration, speed and reliability. We sited some global roll outs of LTSP ie. Telecentros Brazil, 18,000 terminals among others. The presentation moved onto open standards in VoIP and the importance of Session Initialisation protocol [SIP] and phone systems. Moving on to Content Management Systems [CMS] and Customer Relationship Management [CRM]. We displayed how we've integrating Asterisk with Drupal and CiviCRM with our phones and data base. I dialled the Bristol Wireless Lab from my mobile and my record popped up on screen. We ended with a bit of a round table discussion with the Microsoft - David Overton taking questions from the floor. We were asked why we wanted to integrate our phones with our data base when the phone solution they have doesn't send caller ID..... Well ours does! There's a lot of things I wished I'd said but didn't think of at the time. The upshot was that selling proprietary software was better for business.... but for who's business they didn't say. We are working on more presentations with an aim of organising our own conference in the near future. The focus will be a more user orientated aproch. http://www.bristolwireless.net/wiki/index.php/ProposedConference cheers rich _______________________________________________ Bw-daily mailing list Bw-daily at lists.psand.net http://lists.psand.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/bw-daily _______________________________________________ Icthubsw mailing list Icthubsw at lists.psand.net http://lists.psand.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/icthubsw From rich at bristolwireless.net Sat Jun 30 12:22:05 2007 From: rich at bristolwireless.net (Richard Higgs) Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2007 12:22:05 +0100 Subject: [Icthubsw] Fwd: Fwd: Regional Champion - reports for SW ICT Group Meeting, Thursday 5th July Message-ID: <1183202525.46863cdd91b79@www.slackmail.co.uk> thanks julie, i've mailed the list with the information regards rich ----- Forwarded message from Bristol Wireless ----- Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2007 12:16:06 +0100 From: Bristol Wireless Reply-To: Bristol Wireless Subject: Fwd: Regional Champion - reports for SW ICT Group Meeting, Thursday 5th July To: rich at bristolwireless.net ----- Forwarded message from Julie Harris ----- Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2007 17:32:54 +0100 From: Julie Harris Reply-To: Julie Harris Subject: Regional Champion - reports for SW ICT Group Meeting, Thursday 5th July Dear all Please find attached two reports which I am submitting to the group ahead of our meeting next week in Exeter.
