I think that there is also the potential for the SW ICT/WFD Groups to lead in the development of a shared e-learning platform (or virtual learning environment VLE) which allows organisations to upload their own courses to a central system - this could form a part of future plans. There are a number of solutions already in use in the sector - Chris at SPAN has offered to show her system which uses Moodle as a demo and I am sure there are others which could also be demonstrated. With this group in mind as the target for the event, I think that a good approach would be to have a couple of case study VLEs to demonstrate and some short presentations with experience on how well or not this has gone, then we could open the discussion and debate about how to take this agenda forward. If you would like me to line up another case study organisation alongside SPAN then please let me know. (My colleague Julia has been setting up some trial Moodle content as part of a course she is currently taking so that might be useful to demo). As for the date for this event, perhaps it is now too short notice for members of the WFD group? Presumably all of the SW ICT Group already have the date in their diary though so there would be value in going ahead with discussions in the hope that a few of the WFD members can join us? I think therefore that our plans for e-learning should be deferred until our next meeting early October, and Christine is going to come back to me with some potential dates for the ICT group to consider. Hope this is helpful. We can focus on other issues at our meeting on 7th September? I'll ensure that Christine is fully briefed for a conversation with you. Would you please let Christine know that I would like to speak with her about this event later and perhaps you can let me have the correct phone number. I had a good meeting with Tim on Tuesday of this week and I did mention this event to him then - so he should be prepared for the discussions. I had hoped that by now invitations/notices for the meeting would have gone out. Just to let you know that there is now a worker in force for Workforce/Governance - she is Christine O'leary - based in Bristol - and email is Christine at southwestforum.org.uk. As it happens she will be in Learning Curve today, meeting Tim Ward in the morning and me in the afternoon, so might be a could time to catch her and Tim if you wanted to discuss - as the chair and the devt worker for the WFD group they would be key people to approach. Jaclyn -----Original Message----- From: icthubsw-bounces at lists.psand.net [mailto:icthubsw-bounces at lists.psand.net] On Behalf Of Julie Harris Sent: 09 August 2007 10:15 To: icthubsw at lists.psand.net Cc: 'Julia'; 'Paul Webster - NAVCA' Subject: RE: [Icthubsw] VLE WAS FW: Regional Champion work Hi Sean and Rupert I think that the proposal was for the group to host an e-learning workshop/event which would help to support members of the ICT Group and also the Workforce Development group to have a look at e-learning platforms and solutions so that we could have a discussion about how to support the wider sector in developing these solutions. (e.g. Tim Ward, Angela Kerr and Sue Hooper-Lawrie) - shall I make phone calls to these to see if they are available? Let me know if you want me to do more - but before 17th August please as I am then on leave for 2 weeks. These events are coming thick and fast aren't they? As far as I understand the Taunton event is part of The ICT Champions work (independent of the SWICT group?), which is fair enough, but I can't see how it relates to anything in the workplan or how Chris came to be involved. Its great if Matthew can come along to help with the planning and for the event itself. Chris Gaine and her colleague plus Citizens Online are already included in the plan and I am waiting to hear from several others. Please do start a wiki-page if you feel that this will help to engage others in the planning ahead of 7th Sep meeting. Please note that I am on leave from this Friday (17th) until Monday 3rd September. The day will include; * Demonstrations of Moodle an open source learning technology that can be used to support learning and also for distance learning. * Presentations from organisations that have used e-learning solutions sharing their first-hand experiences so far. * Presentations from practitioners/organisations from outside of the region with experience in supporting e-learning initiatives. * Opportunities for you to share your own experience of using e-learning or other use of ICT for learning. The event will be hosted by VOSCUR at their Create Centre in Bristol on Friday 12th October. The day will start at 11.00 and close at 3.30. Please contact me if you would like to attend. Also please contact me if you would like an opportunity to share you own organisations experience of using ICT for learning. You can also contact Julie Harris who is the Regional ICT Champion if you would like more information on plans for this event or if you have a particular interest in this work. If Julie is out of the office then please leave a message with one of her colleagues and she will get back to you. The final outline of the day will be sent out mid-September. This use of technology to support and enhance learning could be of particular benefit in the South West. The Create Centre is of course available but I'm afraid it's highly unlikely any Voscur staff will be available for the event. I understand Nigel has a very full diary for that day (which could have been checked) and as a half-time worker for Voscur, I do not usually work on a Friday there (as I think my regular sig shows). Obviously I'll help in the planning, but Voscur should not be advertised as "hosts" as we just do not have the capacity or I might add any funding for this role.
