Hidden Histories makes accessible some of the highs and lows of Southampton's 20th Century history, the glory of great ships and journeys as well as the disasters and long forgotten tales. Hidden Histories will uncover those treasures through a revolutionary new concept of Street Radio. This is a totally new way of experiencing the city. The system utilises wireless communication technologies such as WIFI and Bluetooth in combination with FM radio to create a public interface to the city?s heritage. A selection of stories from the Oral History Unit will be broadcast from 10 nodal points linked together to form a media rich walk that transports people through the changing life of the city. Following the success of the pilot scheme it is hoped that the project can be extended further not only in Southampton but to other towns and cities as well. The walk begins in and around the proposed ?Cultural Quarter? on Above Bar Street and the Civic Centre complex. You can experience the walk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through any FM radio receiver or mobile phone with radio capacity. >>>>>>>>>> Route maps and radio units can be hired from Southampton?s Tourist Information Centre from Monday 17th March. A limited number of or radios will be available for borrowing. Please bring a portable radio or an FM enabled mobile phone. >>>>>>>>>> More information can be found at www.hiddenhistories.org.uk Read more research notes by Armin Medosch : http://www.thenextlayer.org/node/332 Find out more about HiveNetworks http://www.hivenetworks.net Press contact: Rosie Danby 023 8028 3053 rosie@solentcentre.org.uk >>>>>>>>>> The Solent Centre for Architecture and Design, 30a High Street, Lyndhurst Hampshire SO43 7BG Hidden Histories is funded through an investment made by Southampton Partnership, using SEEDA funding. Forthcoming women who tech summit- To: ukriders@lists.lasa.org.uk Mainly for the women techies amongst us, but some of you chaps may be able to offer some help in enabling UK people to participate in this forcoming event. I've been liaising with Allyson Kapin who is organising Women Who Tech Telesummit which is taking place on March 31st. (I hope to be participating in some of it from here in Devon too but asked about how others could get together and take part from here in the UK!). There's some great panel sessions lined up and it would be great if some of us from the UK took part too! Full details of the event can be seen at the website at: Women Who Tech: A Telesummit for Women in Technology - March 31, 2008 _http://www.WomenWhoTech.com _Allyson now has a couple of lines reserved for larger gatherings and was wondering if any non-profit org in London would want to offer some space for women in London to participate in the telesummit so you all can gather and participate on the call. Sessions run from 11AM to 6:15PM EST which is not ideal for London time but she just wanted to throw it out there even if it's for just the first three sessions. If anyone is interested in the telesummit, or wants to offer their space as a place for people to gather and meet up, please contact allyson@radcampaign.com or see the website for registration for the event and the full details. Thanks!
