As many of you may know, once the part of the HF radio spectrum used for analogue television broadcasts is freed up after digital switch- over, Ofcom plan to sell it to the highest bidder via a spectrum auction. If you feel that part of the spectrum ought to be used for cultural or community uses, you may wish to sign the petition Public Voice have started. best wishes, Honor Harger -----Original Message----- Sent: 27 February 2007 11:17 Subject: Petition No. 10 re the DDR and public benefit Dear Friends Public Voice have petitioned the Prime Minister to ensure that spectrum freed for use following digital switchover is available for citizen and community uses, by rejecting the notion that all of it is sold off to the highest bidder. Digital switchover is the process whereby analogue TV signals are switched off, region by region, across the UK. Under current proposals all of it will be sold at auction to the highest bidder, and none of it will be reserved for citizen uses. This is a once in a generation opportunity for supporters of citizen, community and social action broadcasting and communications to have their say on the future of this valuable UK resource. So please sign our petition at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/CitizensSpectrum and cascade the link to any and all interested parties. The deadline for signing is March 19th 2007. I haven't had time to test this out but I have created a customised version of the config file that should work for BW stuff. (make-live.conf attached). Follow the instructions for installing make-live then install this version over the top of the installed version. You should then be able to run make-live -r /target/directory/bench-iso -a i386 -d etch -p xfce --packages "bristolwireless" (or even maybe make-live -p bristolwireless) to create the live cd. This instruction might need some tweaking but the conf file should get you started. I will try to test this later on tonight but I can't make any promises. It sums up very articulately where we are now, which is far from giving up. This is a reminder that there will be a Momentum Group meeting at Watershed from 5.30 - 6.30 tomorrow. Come along to hear exactly what took place in London yesterday, to regroup and refocus on taking forward Bristol's Digital Strategy. Kind regards Stephen Dear All, As you will be aware, Connecting Bristol was a regional winner and national finalist in the Government's Digital Challenge competition. I was in London yesterday with the bid team to hear the Minister, Angela Smith MP, announce the final winner. Many of you tuned into the live webcast so will already know that Bristol was pipped at the post by Sunderland City Council. Whilst this is extremely disappointing for the team, the Council and the City, I remain hugely impressed by the energy and commitment that Connecting Bristol has generated. The judges particularly noted the innovation and creativity of Bristol's bid. These are two of the City's greatest strengths and I am certain that despite yesterday's setback, the momentum that has been created through the bid will continue to grow. Yesterday, the Minister also announced a 'Runners-up Fund' of ?2 million. This, along with resources that are already allocated in the Council's Medium Term Financial Plan, will enable us to take forward many of the ideas contained in the Connecting Bristol bid. This will play an important role in transforming Council services and in realising our vision for the future of Bristol. The team is in good heart and enthusiastic to move forward. So, let's not feel too disappointed but instead rise to the challenge of becoming a truly modern, connected digital city and council.
