Rupert & Julie,

Apologies for the delay in replying, I am officially on leave but thought I
better respond before the holidays. You both appear to have concerns about
SSSW so I will just reiterate how I think this event came about, how it is
being organised, hopefully clearing up some of the confusion and offering
some solutions.

Julie visited me in October as part of her south west survey, and suggested
that events might be put on in the north of the region around open source
software and green computing. I readily agreed and said that Bristol
Wireless might be interested in hosting something with some support from me
in my Voscur role and some support as a Bristol Wireless volunteer, I
assumed that this would be funded out of the SW ICT Champs budget.

With this in mind I took the proposal to the Bristol Wireless management
Committee, with a tentatively attached budget of £1000, which they agreed,
setting up a sub group to organise it. I ran dates past Julie to ensure it
clashed with no other events and booked the Centre.

At this point I was informed by Rupert that Julie had told him that this
event would be one of the events that the SWICTIDP group would be funding.
Rupert then mailed me and told me not to spend anything without his
authorisation, I then called him and got agreement for some parts of the
budget and promised to develop a more comprehensive budget with the help of
the organisers sub-group. This is the budget that has now been rejected.

I'm sure the organisers will be more than happy to take on Rupert's concerns
about the format of the event, we think it is probably the most important
ICT event undertaken under the auspices of SWICTIDP and SWICTLocal Champion
in the 2007-08 period and of course want it to be a huge success. We have
begun registration, including pre-evaluation, and will of course be happy to
include any recommendations from yourselves around further evaluation and
the format of the day.
We're having an organising meeting tomorrow evening at my home (although I'm
having 2 teeth out at the Dentists in the afternoon, so I may not make much
sense), to which you're both welcome, but feel that between the both of you
and your respective events budgets you could go some way to meeting the
financial needs of this event. You both suggested that some of the money
might be made available out of the "Unmet Needs" fund, unfortunately SSSW
planning preceded this award, and all the Unmet Needs money is fully
allocated in the original budget, as I'm sure Paul Webster will confirm.

Hope that clears some of the confusion up

Sean Kenny
