Message-ID: <1196790274.6276.121.camel@localhost.localdomain> Hello BW , sorry to barge in on your list but i thought you lot might be interested in bathonians are calling 'the most exciting thing that has happened to bath since forever' . You might be aware of the squatting of the South Quay area of bath (the eastern most tip of the western riverside site) by a small collective intent on bringing some affordable entertainment to the area. http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.378776,-2.36596&spn=0.0012,0.003691&t=h&z=19&om=1 I've been asked to look into sorting out networks for this project , we have a zero budget but we don't need much. Would Bristol Wireless or any of its members be interested in helping me sort this out ? We don't need much bandwidth as they are only a few people with laptops on site but it would be nice to stream audio or video from the site. The buildings in this area are all single brick walls with metal girders and such . There aren't many large sheets of metal so i am hoping a single omni antenna would cover all of the site. I remeber hearing that you guys have a some special firmware for mesh routing , would this help ? I've been prodding about in some of the buildings and have discovered a rather tasty network setup in one of the buildings , its wired with an BT Access SDH connection which looks active , which means pant wettingly fast ATM connections in the region of 155mbps although i don't hold out much hope of using it as re-enabling is going to be pricey and ATM looks very hard to use. Anyone used one of these ? Obviously that is waaay faster than we need and i have suggested using a 3g modem attached to a little linux box for routing. Due to the current chaos surrounding the development of the site it looks like we may have it for the next 2 years at least. Over the long term i would like to see this become a base for a 'Bath Wireless' project. Do you have any plans to expand to bath ? I would be happy to take people round the site and answer any questions or find anymore information that was needed. There are all sorts of interesting things going on in the evenings so do drop by ! We've done exactly that in precarious and temporary spaces. Here are some notes ( cribbed from around the web) for using 3G mobile and bluetooth to get internet access. https://wiki.slugbug.org.uk/3G_Mobile_Phone_as_a_Modem Obviously you need to make sure you have a decent data plan on you mobile contract otherwise it can get pricey.. Tmobile web and walk has unlimited ( by which they mean < 2GB a month ) access, so that has been OK, unless you want to download many ISO's! good luck and have fun! Over the air, is an event centred around mobile and wireless development. Everyone seems to be saying 2008 will be huge in the mobile space due to cheaper data tariffs, better averages devices and better development frameworks. Hey even Xtech 2008 has caught on to this... So next year, on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th April we are going to throw open the doors and get everyone involved and slightly interested in mobile development, in with the makers, operators and service creators. This will be a chance to learn, play for 2 days on someone else's sim and HSDPA data plan. And who knows win some very tasty prizes. So please keep the date free if possible, we would love to see you all there, including our international developers.
